to beat president obama. a look at the war in afghanistan. now the longest war. how do we get out? does obama's policy differ from president bush's and what is the effect for generations to come? joe and mika and willie join in the conversation later this hour. we begin with the debt crisis. they are trying to make a deal on the deficit. houses of congress are rolling out separate compromises to safe off a default. harry reid is meeting with mitch mcconnell to craft a solution to appeal to both parties. according to reports, this would do the following. it would allow the debt ceiling to be raised three times for a total of $2.5 trillion. in exchange, some $1.5 trillion in spending cuts would be enacted. the plan would be established to identify new deficit cuts. proposal, already, getting a lukewarm response from the fellow republicans. among them, the freshman snar mark arubio and tom coburn. take a listen. >> it gives the president the ability to raise the debt limit. the debt limit isn't the problem. the problem is the debt. the plan, as outlined to me isn't a credible solution. >>

karzai's brother rocking the world of afghanistan. joining us now from kabul, nbc's atia aboui. how did this happen in the fist place? we're getting new details, i know, about how exactly he was assassinated. >> good morning, willie. also referred to as awk was the younger half brother of president hamid karzai. he was shot and killed in his home yesterday in kandahar. a trusted security guard and confidant went into the home using that trust, lured awk out of a meeting, sent him into another room where they were alone the sign papers. as awk was signing those papers, that's when mohammed shot him. it's unclear if he shot hit twice in the head or three times in various parts of his body. right now what's confusing everyone is where did mohammed shoot karzai? what we understand is they're from the same klan, that they're, in fact, distant relatives. the taliban claimed responsibility saying they've worked with sadar mohammed for some time now. but many believe it could be because of a tribal feud which confuses everyone when it comes to afghanistan, because we have to remember there's mo

joining you live this morning from new york. let's start with breaking news in afghanistan, the half brother of this country's president was shot in killed in kandahar. ahmed wali karzai owned his own guard, gunned him down in his house while he was entertaining friends. this karzai was a powerful council chief and pretty powerful guy, his name has been linked to drug dealing. one u.s. diplomatic cable turned up on wikileaks, widely known to be corrupt and narcotics trafficker. house is condemning the assassination of southern afghanistan political strongman who is the president's half brother. he was killed by a close associate receiving guests at his home. david piper has reaction. >> afghan president hamid karzai equated the loss-his half-brother with the suffering of his country men. >> god willing is there will be an end to pain and suffering of afghan people and peace and security will be implemented in the country. >> visiting french president nicolas sarkozy offered condolences, saying the death was reminder of the potential cruel destiny of each afghan today. despite the outpouring of sympathy, the head of kandahar provincial council was a controversial figure in the country there were persistent allegation about the links to the opium trade. hamid karzai always defended his younger brother and managed to protect him despite long-standing campaign to have him removed. privately, nato officials detested wali karzai but if they wanted anything done, they had to go through him in an interview with fox news last year, he promised to turn over a new leaf.

and afghanistan wars. that is $1 trillion of difference. the boehner plan doesn't consider the winding down of the afghanistan and iraq wars. another thing that is in there that is very different from the democrat and republican ideas is boehner has this balanced budget amendment in there. it is a requirement for both houses to pass it. the democrats say that is ridiculous. the fact of the matter is, a lot of people out there in the country think it is a good idea until they start having to worry about entitlements being cut as a result of it. that is something that the democrats and republicans disagree on. probably the biggest thing is the idea of the two-step process that boehner has. the republicans, i should say the democrats don't like that at all. they have to work that one out. >> joe johns, you are up and at it for us. we have reporters on capitol hill who are checking in with you in d.c. another interesting day. joe, thank you so much. the president has lost some 30,000 supporters in the midst of all of this. the president has urged a compromi compromise. he did it on twitter. he

trove of documents that have been released in the last year. the iraq war logs, the afghanistan war logs, and what has been called cablegate, as the u.s. state department documents that are continuing to be released. why does it matter so much? we will talk about that this afternoon, but let's just take one example that came out in the iraq war logs. february 2007. the war log show that to give you zero men were standing, iraqis under an apache helicopter. the men have their hands up. they clearly are attempting to surrender. the apache helicopter can see this. so they are not wrote. the soldiers called back to the base and asked what they should do. the lawyer in the bass says you cannot surrender to a helicopter, and they blow the man attempting to surrender away. that was february 2007. now, we will fast forward to july 12, 2007. video that has been released by wikileaks. this devastating video of an area of baghdad where a group of men were showing around two reuters journalists. one was an up-and-coming videographer, and one was this driver. he was 40 years old, father of four. they

, mullah omar was dead. we're following the story. we go live to kabul, afghanistan. david, this one has got people wondering. what's going on? >> reporter: well, the news first broke by an afghan television station and then later in the day, cnn and other media received a message by an individual claiming to be a top taliban commander. that individual said that mullah omar had died of heart failure last week and a successor had already been named. the taliban, like you said, later came out and said they have been the victim of a hacking and their phones and emails have been tapped. in fact this message was phoney. cnn doesn't have any confirmation of the sort. we spoke with nato official and they have no operational knowledge on the ground. so the whereabouts of mullah omar are unknown. last believed to be in pakistan, where taliban militants have launched attacks across that border against troops down in the southern region. it's those southern and eastern regions of afghanistan that have experienced some of the highest levels of attacks. and this all comes at a very interesting time.

in iraq and afghanistan, about a tr trillion there. highly questionable. speaker boehner's plan has two steps in it. totals $1.2 trillion in cuts. has a six to nine month debt ceiling and cuts and another debt ceiling mechanism next year sometime. david, seems like the president is basically saying all i want, get this out of the way before the incomes election. in that interest i'll give you what you want, basically? >> the democrats, without, and republican. s have drawn a line in the sand. problem is, it's inside it's republican tent. it's basically up to the bedroom. saying, we'll given you cuts, and part of reid's plan is $1.2 trillion in defense and non-defense discretionary cuts. we don't know what the cuts will be. may be real cuts in real problems, that the president and other democrats care a lot about. they have basically yielded to republicans on a big conceptual linking, lifting the debt creeling to spending cuts and -- >> two things republicans still want. a dollar for dollar cut in spending to mamp a debt ceiling increase and a trigger mechanism for a balanced budget amen
